Meenakshi Amman Temple Sundareswarar or is a historic Hindu temple located in the holy city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to the god Shiva – as Sundareswarar or Beautiful Lord and his consort Parvati in the form of Meenakshi. The temple is the heart, the root of the year 2500 the old city of Madurai. The building complex houses 14 magnificent gopurams or towers, including two gold gopurams master gods, the luxuriously carved and painted. According to Hindu legend, Shiva came down to earth in the form of Sundareswarar marry Meenakshi, an incarnation of Parvati. The most important festival in the temple are Meenakshi Thirukalyanam (The divine marriage Meenkashi), celebrated annually in April.
The towers of the temple were covered with scaffolding for painting and March 2009.
